The City of Meridian operates under the mayor-council or “strong mayor” form of government.

The elected mayor is the city’s chief executive officer and is responsible for administering and leading the day-to-day operations of the city government.

The five-member City Council, elected by wards, is the legislative arm of the government, setting policy and annually adopting the city’s operating budget.

Elected and Appointed Officials

The Mayor is elected at large every four years. The City Council is elected by ward every four years.

The Mayor appoints the Chief Administrative Officer and the head of each department:

  • Public Works
  • Finance & Records
  • Community Development
  • Parks & Recreation
  • Fire Department
  • Police Department
  • Meridian Public Safety

All other city employees are under a civil service system.
