MDOT Adopt-A-Highway Program

It costs money to clean up litter – a lot of it.

The Mississippi Department of Transportation spends more than $3 million a year picking up litter along Mississippi roadways – not counting the costs of decreased property values, commerce and tourism and health risks. This money could be used to build and maintain roads and bridges.

You can get involved in Mississippi’s litter prevention efforts by adopting a state-maintained highway section and commit to keeping it clean and litter-free.

Who can participate?
Anyone can apply to adopt a section of highway: fraternities or sororities, civic organizations, church groups, scout groups and commercial or private enterprises.

How can you get involved?
To apply for admission into the Adopt-a-Highway Program, contact the MDOT District Litter Prevention Coordinator by visiting the MDOT website at mdot.ms.gov.

What’s required?
If your application is approved, you agree to:

  • Provide manpower to pick up litter on both sides of a 1- to 2-mile stretch of highway.
  • Agree to pick up litter at least four times per year.
  • Agree to abide by all MDOT program safety rules and guidelines.
  • Report pick-up activities using the Activity Reporting Form available on the website.
